Hello

This is from my iPhone as I'm still in hosp have had the op on Monday.
I'm in a lot Of pain.

I had synovectomy and debridement but it was supposed to be a 30min op under general anaesthetic and it ended up being 3 hrs. The joint is very diseased and they took a hell of a lot of damaged tissues out. I have no cruciate ligaments left in there at all and although there is very definate arthritis in there, they tell me they haven't ever seen anything like it in a woman of my age. It was like a war zone in there.
They sent some stuff off for sampling
Basically I need a full knee replacement and some extra stabilising bits added on. The reality of the right knee not being the best alongside iffy hips and other joints makes it complex.
I've been refused funding for my new drug.

The ward here are orthopedics so you'd think they know about ra but ive had to do a fair bit of education, not least about pain killers.
They are used to giving pain killers
But
Not used to people who take mst as chronic pain management and then need oramorph etc ontop.
(nurse 1 refused in case she overdosed me, nurse 2 said wait Gil morning shift- it's a 32 bedded ward and so over an hour until drug round even gets to our bay.... Eeek!)
I got to screaming point after 1.5hrs of chewing the sheet and whimpering this morning....

Anyway! It's appears the message re pain management has got through and they've been better this afternoon.

Was meant to be going home with my 'general arthroscopy' sheet which says 'slight discomfort' after a few days!!!!
Hahahahaha!

When I get to slight discomfort I shall hang out the bloody flags!!!

Poor you. Does not sound good about your knee. I cannot understand why they did not go straight for a knee replacement instead of putting you through all this.

I really don't think these orthopods know much about RA. Mine certainly didn't. He had no idea how my RA would have affected my knee. He was shocked how much damage had been done when he opened me up. My knee was totally shot. He also did not realise the impact on my recovery. I should have been springing around in three months after the op in January. It took until the middle of September before I was able to put one foot in front of the other going downstairs.

Have they given you any idea when they will be looking at a knee replacement? I know they are reluctant to do replacements in "young" people. I am 48 and I am still classed as "young" because they only last for about 10-15 years. My attitude is 10-15 years in RA is a long time and I will worry about then when and if I need to.

As for the pain management, it does not suprise me. Leaving you in so much pain is unforgivable.

I nearly lamped the first physio who came to get me out of bed. He just yanked my leg over to the edge of the bed and I nearly passed out with the pain. I found out afterwards he was a trainee and he was given a severe talking to after.

Keep your spirits up and I hope you will be able to go home soon.

Hi Jenni

Well I m very pleased to hear that your brilliant educational skills came into good use at the hospital, what would they have done without you LOL

My goodness, quite an operation, three hours duration no wonder you was suffering so much, and no one knows pain better than you !

Keep us posted on your plan of action, re this new drug, you know we are all behind you, on here, and will do whatever we can to advance your cause for funding this drug whether it be in the UK or US !

Hope you feel little better very soon.

Hi Jenni - I've been thinking of you. They finally agree to do something to help you but not quite the right thing! I hope you have the pain under control now and you start to recover now you are home. Is your building work finally finished?

Yes the building work is now finished!

Having said that the gutters and exterior painting is still outstanding.

But the indoor bits are done. We are having new wardrobes done and my dad is coming on shelf putting up duties in the wk.

Delighted to be home and enjoying the new downstairs room!

Hi
Glad your now home and hope your pain has now eased.Will they be able to offer you any more surgery or is that it? Surely they can't leave your knee in that state .Anyway i really hope they change their decision on your drug funding and if i can help at all please let me know.
